Cultural Exportation

Cha Chaan Teng has gained popularity worldwide due to the iconic image of Hong Kong. Many Cha Chaan Tengs have successfully opened and thrived in different parts of the world.

For instance, Leung and Lau (2021) present a distinct version of Cha Chaan Teng called “Charme,” which is located in Beijing and Shanghai. This franchise has transformed the traditionally affordable neighborhood cuisine into a fine dining experience. The dishes at Charme have undergone significant modifications to become more luxurious, such as adding honey and topping the Hong Kong-style French toast with ice cream. The restaurant's design follows a clean and upscale Western dining aesthetic. They have reimagined and elevated the concept of Cha Chaan Teng.

Cha Chaan Teng's food culture has been exported through cultural globalization, with the concept being embraced in various countries worldwide. In this context, the idea of “relocalization” also applies to foreign food cultures. Leung and Lau (2021) provide an example of the “Hong Kong 8 AM Café” in Malaysia, which showcases the “relocalized” Hong Kong Cha Chaan Teng culture. The café has modified the famous Macao pork chop bun by using Hong Kong-style pineapple buns called “bi lo ju.” Additionally, they have incorporated Malaysia's local cuisine by using crispy white buns instead of the traditional pineapple buns. This demonstrates how the food culture of Cha Chaan Teng has influenced and brought innovation to other culinary traditions.

To sum up, Cha Chaan Teng culture has made its mark globally, introducing new concepts and ideas to different cultures. Hong Kong's significant influence is evident in the fusion of Eastern and Western cuisines, showcasing the creative culinary prowess of its people.
